ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will start with a humble polygon cube and learn how to use deformers on it. Deformers, preschool work, you say? You want to skip ahead to joints and skinning? Do not underestimate the power of the deformer. Sometimes they are all you need on a simple rig; and sometimes they will be that extra nuance that you need on a larger rig. Th erefore, we will devote a chapter to getting you started with deformers. Th ey have been around for a long time. In fact, most of these that we will learn are the remaining bits of code from the software I learned in college back in the stone age. Th at software company was bought; as were many other competing software companies. All the best parts of the code were combined together to form what you upstarts know as Maya.
