ABSTRACT
Just like still-life images painted during the renaissance, food photographers have relied on plates, fabric, and cutlery to instill a sense of place inside a photograph. These are what we call props. Used effectively they can add colour, movement, and shape to images, but the opposite holds true, too: used improperly, they can clutter and detract.
