ABSTRACT

Much of what has been written focuses on manufacturing which has been practicing Lean since the days of Henry Ford. As students learn more about Lean and do more with it, their job will be to find, develop, and adapt methods that work best for their institution. Begin by building students knowledge around Lean, continuous improvement, and process improvement. A good research resource within higher education is Lean HE which is a peer organization for people working to apply Lean and similar approaches in higher education. A good starting point is to research other organizations doing Lean including healthcare, manufacturing, government, and service providers. Even though students are not a manufacturing business, there is still knowledge to be gained from hearing and seeing Lean concepts and tools in practice from someone who has been doing it for years. Consider hiring experienced Lean trainers to teach courses on Lean methods and tools at students' institution.
