ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the key findings of our study on child well-being and describes recent government initiatives, such as national poverty alleviation programs, pre-school education efforts, hukou reform, and their influence on child development. We discuss the formidable structural barriers for the future improvement of the conditions of children and youth in view of recent policy developments, especially the efforts to cap the population of large cities. We also advocate for the building of capacity in the provision and delivery of relevant services to meet the multiple needs of vulnerable children in China.
