ABSTRACT

Singapore is known for its mega shopping malls, fantastic architecture and colorful ethnic neighborhoods. The country has four major ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese, Indians and Europeans. The Ministry of Education (MIE) manages Singaporean schools through a model that maintains both the quality of education and serves the economic needs of the nation. Hiring in Singapore is an interesting topic within the Catholic school sector because aside from St. Joseph’s Institution International School, Catholic schools are within the prevue of the MIE. Singaporean Catholic educators see one of their goals as the evangelization of their student body, not in a proselytizing mode, but in an exposure for understanding purpose. Singaporean Catholic school leaders live in a society where religious beliefs are relegated to the private realm and schools have national goals. The Catholic spirit, or religious charism, was present within the schools as part of “who we are,” but not in a catechetical mode.
