ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the factors which fed into the questionnaire design and the challenges involved. It then explores its responses, including the frequency with which participants reported reading and listening to different text types, the formations (alone, with one other person, in groups etc.) and purposes reported, and the use of screen technology and multiple languages. This chapter also draws heavily on the rich open question responses, where participants write about reading aloud from toilet walls, as therapy work, and as part of personal composition processes (just three examples from hundreds) and explores what we mean when we consider a practice ‘common’ or ‘everyday,’ as well as why some practices seem to be more ‘visible’ or talked-about than others.
