ABSTRACT
Chapter 4 looks at terminology as a concept and as a database. Concepts such as terms, termbanks, vocabulary, monolingual and bilingual glossaries and corpora are explained in detail, including the skill of writing good definitions. The next step is to define the difference between standardisation, standards and ISO standards. We then have a closer look at the CAT tool terminology database to understand how it is filled in contrast to the translation memory database, how it stores metadata and how to add the data. Web searches and good search techniques are indispensable to the translator to help boost general or customised terminology databases. The overview of terminology includes concordances on the web and in the CAT tool. The concordance shows how terms are used in context. This chapter wants to demonstrate the inseparability of the translation memory (TM) and terminology databases (Tmdb). The value of a good Tmdb which supports the TM is often underestimated. The project assignment draws heavily on a good use of both databases in parallel to improve consistency and quality.
