ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 goes virtual and moves entirely into the cloud. It considers the benefits and demands of translation management systems, translation portals, platforms and servers. Platforms are freely accessible to all on the web. Servers and portals are managed by LSPs and are accessible by invitation. The key focus in the chapter is on translation management systems in which all translation efforts are centralised in one single tool. The system combines many features discussed in earlier chapters, including for example, the merging of adaptive MT and CAT tool TM functions. Workflows are considered from the perspective of LSPs and translators. The project-based assignment tests project manager competences such as workflow management in web-based systems, including new features such as crowdsourcing and technological features previously discussed. The chapter balances and compares the roles of LSPs and freelancers in translation management systems and considers the impact on job satisfaction of either party. The chapter ends with a consideration of TEnTs in relation to the industry’s mantra that the tools will improve time, efficiency and quality.
