Introduction

This chapter explains that the main theme of this book is to explore the distinctive characteristics of Jain thought, in the context of environmental politics, and the importance of the alternative perspective it offers to the western green movement in particular. I explain the definitions (for the purposes of this book) of environmentalism and political ecology and argue that Jainism is a spiritual and philosophical tradition that should not be forced into an ideological straitjacket.
