ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the distinctive Jain concept of karma in the context of ecological thought. It outlines the main principles of Jainism or more accurately Jain Dharma (in particular Ahimsa or non-injury) and the cultural sensibility that accompanies these principles. The current social position of Jains in India and the Diaspora is explored in the context of the development of Jain thought. The chapter argues that it is misleading (in the ecological context) to emphasise the austerities of ascetics, but that we should look for inspiration to the ‘moderate’ ecological principles followed by laymen and laywomen. The most important of these is the principle of Careful Action, which governs commercial and professional activity as well as such basic acts as eating and walking.
