ABSTRACT

This chapter is a science fiction story about twins that illustrates the thought of Aristotle. The twins live in a future utopia where three-dimensional printers have made jobs and markets redundant. Instead, everyone plays a holographic game suited to their innate abilities. Players too far above or below the mean are “topped-out” or “tapped-out” to a game in which they are more competitive. The twins subvert this system, with one (representing Aristotle’s practical knowledge) going up through the games and the other (representing theoretical knowledge) going down until she reaches the Tinkers who live outside the system. The story demonstrates how Aristotle’s philosophy is closer to the moment, but it still leaves us becoming in time, trapped in the ethical and practical systems inculcated by society.
