ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the Mambila people and surveys the different forms of divination they use and their attitudes to them. Some types are taken more seriously; others can be dismissed as mere games. More detail is given about spider (or crab) divination (briefly described in Chapter 1). Its practice and the principles of interpreting its results are described. The logical problems of contradictory answers and ways of testing individual spider pots for truth telling are considered.
