ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the status of infrastructure development in Nigeria during the 55 years after its Independence, from 1960 to 2015. Under the umbrella of economic reforms, it explains privatization initiatives, reforms in the energy sector, banking and insurance, and telecommunications sectors. The human side of reform was seen in efforts to provide infrastructures that would reduce poverty, introduce changes in agriculture, and improve educational opportunities. The chapter argues that Nigeria has been regarded as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Military governance of infrastructure development in Nigeria had some benefits, particularly in the areas of highway construction, electrical power production, transportation, and construction of airports and seaports. The national development plan policies have been shown to contribute immensely to the development of infrastructure in Nigeria. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
