ABSTRACT

This chapter develops Phases 3 and 4 of the Sarvodaya Movement. Examining Phase 3 of the Sarvodaya Movement, the chapter demonstrates the ways in which the Sarvodaya Movement responded to the risks arising out of Buddhist nationalism and the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka in the 1980s. The chapter then examines Sarvodaya’s transitioning into Phase 4 in the 1990s and its new models of Global Awakening and holistic development, which were based on the spiritual concepts of tolerance and interdependence. This chapter also presents Sarvodaya’s shift away from its earlier anti-colonial stance, and its new trends in fusing the local cultural and spiritual dimensions with more secular and global principles of good governance, such as those of sustainable development.
