ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the methodology used for research, including challenges and obstacles for conducting research in refugee contexts. The research was divided into two parts: Part 1 which used qualitative methods to understand what is ECD in emergencies from a South Sudanese cultural perspective. The qualitative research uncovered the capabilities and child development outcomes young children can and should achieve with ECD in emergencies emergency programming from the South Sudanese cultural perspective. The result of this part of the research produced a set of capabilities and child development outcomes for South Sudan children. This was the basis of adapting a quantitative tool measuring children’s development outcomes which was used in Part of the research. Part 2 of the research used mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) to understand what are the outcomes and capabilities for children and parents through the implementation of the ECD model (Community-Led Action for Children) in a refugee context. The research included a programme group and a wait list control group to see if outcomes were better, the same or worse than when ECD services are not provided at all. Additionally, the research investigated if there was a correlation between parents’ knowledge and skills around child development and their children’s developmental capabilities.
