ABSTRACT

Many researchers report bypassing setting up a local bank by using online banking, credit cards, and wire transfers or mobile money. Field-experienced researchers suggest a wide variety of ways to find housing. One strategy that is probably more reliable in urban areas is to check local online sites. Gender, sexuality, race, class, and age have a profound effect on both setting up in the field and in the actual fieldwork itself. The particular research site, research partners, and topic will determine the degree to which disadvantages can be offset, overcome, or even turned into advantages. The age of the researcher and local assumptions about what is expected of people of a particular age affect access to informants and social treatment. Several scholars noted the importance of writing—emailing friends and/or family, journaling, blogging, or using social media—as a way to release tension and gain insight into the research process.
