ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 deals with transport in urban areas. It explains how motor vehicles, especially the private car, can be very useful and, therefore, very popular, but, nevertheless, cause environmental problems. Ultimately, there is not the room to fit enough of them in to meet the demand. The goal of seeking faster speeds to shorten journey times prevailed for a long time but has now been largely superseded by the pursuit of environmental quality and safety through lower speeds. This can be achieved through traffic calming, where the physical design of roads control driver behaviour and facilitates a quality environment.
