ABSTRACT

The populace were affirming a responsibility for the survival and future wellbeing of the Earth. Of course in one sense “the Earth” is merely a symbol for the environment as a whole, and Earth Days are festivals of green politics and environmental concern. Earth Day was a celebration, involving some kind of identification with the planet that is our home, some kind of global patriotism. So dancing, concerts, balloons, picnics, barbecues, and family outings were all appropriate. All images of the Earth concern humanity in a multiplicity of ways. The images, of course, exist in human minds. A hierarchical view of the cosmos may reflect a hierarchical view of human society, and in some cases almost certainly did.
