ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter once again emphasises Murakami’s presentation of the power of narrative by referring to his 2009 speech “Walls and Eggs” delivered in Jerusalem. Then, focusing on one of Murakami’s recent novels 1Q84, I discuss how he describes a narrative as a defence against the system that capitalises on individuals. I also briefly discuss the two novels he wrote after the 2011 earthquakes and tsunami in the east coast of Japan in order to explain how Murakami attempts to suggest the power of narrative as a way to deal with the sense of alienation and isolation experienced both by those who were affected by the disasters.
