ABSTRACT

In this chapter we deal with the discourse surrounding religious pluralism and freedom of religion. Here, we focus on the concept of apostasy (irtedad) from a contextualist perspective and examine how the contextualist approach refutes the theological justification for sentencing apostates to death. In particular, we explore this issue by presenting the debate between Muhsin Kadivar and Grand Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani, a traditionalist religious scholar who supports the death penalty for apostates.
