ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we assess how Hasan Yousefi-Eshkevari presents the notion of context in his approach to the Qurʾān. Yousefi-Eshkevari focuses on presenting a historically contextualised reading of the Qurʾān without questioning the revelatory nature of the text and reducing it to a purely human work. He acknowledges a distinction between the eternal or immutable teachings of Islam and its temporal or mutable precepts; however, unlike Soroush and Shabestari, he does not believe that it is necessary to come up with a new theory of revelation, nor does he attempt to challenge the traditional understanding of revelation.
