ABSTRACT

The Tupolev SB-2, sporting the Red Star, was Luukkanen's first kill of the Winter War and now he could see the crew of three climb out of the aircraft, waving white cloths. In the air war the Finns had the reverse situation of those on the ground, where the Russians were freezing and the Finns were snug and warm in their dugouts or were at least able to bear the weather because of their clothing and activity. Seldom did the Finnish pilots have a cozy warm air base to return to; their bases were as mobile as those of the ground forces and were required to be available where needed. General Lundquist was well aware of the problems confronting his tiny air force and he was sometimes amused by the stories of newsmen trying to track down his pilots' exploits.
