ABSTRACT

The scene of our first chapter was the small town of Larchinishki in Lithuania. The people of this town had always been God-fearing and pious, like so many of the Jews who live in the small towns in Lithuania, but from the day the railway line ran past this city, the Haskallah began to stir up the youth of Larchinishki. The throbbing whistle of the engine was like a summons to a people in darkness. “Rise up, light up, for the glory of the Haskallah shines upon you.”
