ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the within-culture differences in value prevalence between rural and urban areas. The test of difference column indicates more or less prevalence of the Confucian values in China than in the United States. One major characteristic of the traditional Chinese value system was male dominance. This was accompanied by rigidity in male-female sexual relationships, and this rigidity was asymmetrically imposed upon females more than on males. The lack of differences in endorsing the two values does not mean, however, that there are no cultural differences. In terms of interpersonal relationships, some significant differences were found between the Chinese respondents living in Shanghai, suburban towns, or rural areas. Most of the cross-nation differences in cultural values could not be attributed to urban-rural differences within each nation, even though some of the within-nation differences were significant. The popular concept that men and women should get equal pay for equal work received more support in the United States than in China.
