ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at cultural values in a much more macroscopic sense, comparing whole nations as if each were a single entity and the cultural values as a set, not just as a series of individual measures. The sample surveys conducted in Taiwan and Korea were designed as part of the larger project on communication and cultural change in East Asia directed by Godwin Chu. If Western media influence accounts for the erosion of traditional Confucian culture, then this influence should be far more evident in Taiwan and Korea than in China. The Taiwan survey interviewed 960 randomly selected individuals from four districts, covering Taipei, a city and a town in the Taipei suburbs, and a village. A greater similarity is shown between China and Taiwan than between China and Korea, suggesting special commonalities between the two Chinese cultures.
