ABSTRACT

Educators in most parts of the world agree that postsecondary education should include more than the traditional university program terminating in a bachelor’s degree. In the United States, systems of technical colleges and community colleges exist in almost every state to serve those students seeking higher educational certification short of the baccalaureate degree. There are two universities in Jordan, the older University of Jordan in Amman and the newer Yarmouk University. The University of Botswana represents a development similar to Yarmouk University, but in an economically poorer nation, striving to overcome rather different problems. Botswana’s demand for training in commerce, accounting, business administration, and law is increasing. Training at level one for middle-stratum manpower needs has so far been restricted to certificate and diploma courses in accounting, business studies, statistics, and teacher education. Agricultural development seems of much more immediate concern in Botswana than it does in Jordan.
