ABSTRACT

FROM Proceedings of the Anti-Maynooth Conference of 1845, edited by A. S. Thelwall, London, 1845, p. vii. When in February, 1845, Peel announced the intention of the government to make an increase in the grant to Maynooth College, the committee of the Protestant Association responded by calling a special meeting to oppose the increase. This was to consist of delegates from all the Protestant denominations. On 10 March, John Plumtre, the member of Parliament for East Kent, and Chairman of the Exeter Hall meeting on the 18th, published this address to rally opinion against the government’s policy. It contains most of the arguments used against the Maynooth grant during this and other agitations on the question.
