ABSTRACT

Maynooth. A Letter to Daniel O’Connell Esq. M.P., by Sir Culling Eardley Smith, Bart., London, 1845. The chairman of the Central Anti-Maynooth Committee issued this public letter to the Irish Catholic leader in support of the Commitee’s attempt to prevent general questions of voluntaryism and state religion entering the movement against the Maynooth grant. A large part of it therefore argues O’Connell’s inconsistency: he is castigated for attacking state religious endowment and for lending his support to the Church Rate abolitionists in consequence, whilst at the same time contending for the use of state funds to aid the Catholic seminary at Maynooth.
