ABSTRACT

FROM WILLIAM BENNETT, Popery as set Forth in Scripture: Its Guilt and Its Doom, London, 1850. This illustrates the sort of sermon against the Catholic hierarchy complained of by Wiseman in his Appeal It was preached by the curate of St Mary’s Parish Church at Walthamstow, on 5 November, 1850, and opens with reference to the appointed prayers of thanksgiving—then still included in the Book of Common Prayer—for the national deliverance of 1605. The rest is a characteristic Protestant interpretation of the history and corruption of the Catholic Church.
