ABSTRACT

FROM A Letter Addressed to His Grace the Duke of Norfolk on the Occasion of Mr Gladstone’s Recent Expostulation, London, 1875. Newman’s pamphlet was only one of a large number hastily written by eminent Catholics in response to Gladstone’s attack on the Vatican Decrees. He wrote in reply to an invitation from the Catholic Duke of Norfolk, and took the leading question of the political loyalty of Catholics as his main theme—tracing, as Gladstone had done, Papal pronouncements on the subject. The following passage includes a reference to Newman’s own Lectures on the Present Position of Catholics in England, written during the ‘Papal Aggression’ crisis of 1851.
