Many observers of the trial of Bishop King suspected that the moderation of Archbishop Benson’s Judgment was an attempt to shield the Ritualists and avoid an open conflict within the Church. J. T. Tomlinson’s pamphlet, The ‘Historical’ Grounds of the Lambeth Judgment Examined, sought to review technical weaknesses in Benson’s position; Lord Robert Montagu’s, whilst covering the same area—altar lights, the mixed chalice, the eastward position, and so on—was a much more candid attempt to reveal what he supposed to be Benson’s actual motive, as the following very short extract shows.
