ABSTRACT

The English teachers stressed the importance of the 'relationships' that they established with the students. The English teachers also felt they were more than just developers of language skills. The English teachers emphasized the importance of a pedagogy based on discussion and talk - whole class, small groups, and one-to-one discussion. The English teachers also explained that they were attempting to move towards teaching styles which gave students greater control over their learning and more opportunities to express their thoughts and opinions. As well as adopting a positive attitude to students' ethnicity the English teachers explained that they constantly strove for non-racist practice in their interactions with students. Anti-racism was also central to their view of the political role of English teaching. Another strategy that the English teachers used to try to raise the students' understanding of racism was to teach them certain sociological concepts.
