ABSTRACT

Tom Eddison, a centre worker, talked with us on the issues connected to women at Open Door and his comments are valuable for they tell us about the work, but more importantly, they give us a real indication of how people’s ideas are changed and particularly men’s ideas. Jenny sees the beginning of her community involvement and her political awareness arising directly from her experience as a woman with kids. Sheffield’s Community Work Apprenticeship Scheme is an important example of such a policy in action. This chapter concerns the facilitation of a process of working class self-education within the City of Sheffield. Our Sheffield fieldwork was a study of a number of ‘projects’, funded in the main by the City Council. Carol Baker and her husband Mike, have different attitudes towards the weekend courses which Open Door takes to Northern College. Mike is unemployed but when working had experience of work-related college courses.
