The social wage and the community power themes worked implicitly to structure conflicts and disagreements between activists from the first day of school on, but it was only during the first half-term break that these orientations began to rise into clearly articulated positions. Even then the process of articulation was slow, beginning with disagreements over the appropriate ways to handle very specific problems. The original closure of the school reportedly sparked indignation throughout Croxteth, even in old age pensioners and families who sent their children to the local Catholic secondary schools. The pro-community group, however, believed that the community could be further involved, was badly needed, and even should be involved for the campaign to be in line with their personal political objectives. The vast majority of teachers, as noted already, had little interest in party politics and had no wish to make the struggle for the school a merely party-political affair.
