ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the personal and professional characteristics of the promoted teachers who comprise the survey population. It discusses personal background details; academic and professional qualifications; and factors and views related to promotion in teaching. The vast majority of teachers in promotion positions were married, with fewer than a tenth never having been married. The chapter examines social class background of promoted teachers, as indicated by fathers’ and mothers’ normal occupation at the time the respondents themselves completed their secondary schooling. The survey population were also asked to indicate the teaching method areas in which they specialized during their course of pre-service teacher training, regardless of the length and type of training. In order to ascertain teachers’ views about the characteristics of a desirable work location, with regard to a school’s size, geographical location and the socio-economic status of pupils attending the school, teachers were asked to respond to several statements regarding the matters.
