ABSTRACT
In narrative discourse, some sentences directly report the progress of events and the actions of the characters, while others help lay out or comment on the events. The former group is called the foreground part and the latter the background part. Foreground information tends to be expressed by the perfective aspect and background information by the imperfective aspect (see Hopper, 1979).
