ABSTRACT

In this extended clinical example, we meet Lily and Lucas, a couple struggling with both alcohol and sexual addiction and the damage this is doing in their relationship. The author introduces them to the felt sense polyvagal dialogue (FSPD) process, and through this safely structured vehicle, their shocking childhood stories of childhood sexual abuse are communicated. Through the understanding of how parental issues are carried forward (via their imago) and how this shapes their nervous system, the couple find ways to understand and heal from devastating early circumstances that drive addictive behaviours. This vignette illustrates many of the methods offered in the FSPM, including the three circles and focusing. This clinical example offers a compassionate look at how sexual and other addiction can develop and how to heal them in the context of both individual and couples’ therapy.
