ABSTRACT

Liesl Tommy is a South African-American director whose work and poetic style have significantly contributed to the discourse on women and immigrants working in theatre in America. She recalls the experiences as life-changing, as she felt she had found a place where she belonged and a community of people who shared her passions, goals, and artistic interests. She has worked at The Public Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Dallas Theater Center, Yale Repertory Theatre, and Vineyard Theatre to name a few. Liesl Tommy has worked on many classics, including William Shakespeare’s plays, and she is particularly known for her direction of Hamlet for the California Shakespeare Theatre in 2012, in which both Hamlet and Ophelia were played by actors of color.
