ABSTRACT

Anna Ziegler is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary American playwriting. Her plays speak of fantastic realism and lyrical spaces, and introduce the audience to characters brimming with humanity. She employs poetic language to tackle themes such as abuse, identity, friendship, adolescence, love, and history. Her style is very distinct, as she alternates moments of intense, realistic dialogue to asides, where the characters address the audience directly, thus breaking the 52fourth wall and the timeline of the play. She believes a “drumbeat of plays” can contribute to ignite social change and awareness, and her plays are certainly aiming at that.
