ABSTRACT

Communication may be split into two categories: verbal and nonverbal. We just studied how to verbally transmit a message.

Nonverbal communication is perfectly integrated in the way we express ourselves. It’s more difficult to control than verbal communication, and we tend to use it in a subconscious and automatic way.

It’s made of two parts: para-verbal communication, and paralinguistic communication. The first one refers to the way the words are “dressed up”: how we pronounce them, how fast we speak, etc. It covers everything “surrounding” the word. As for the second one, it’s more distant from the word in itself and refers to our body language: attitude, movements, facial expressions, and looks.

In this section, we are to study nonverbal communication and the importance of the environment.
