ABSTRACT

In aviation, however, standardized the rules regarding phone calls may be in order to minimize the risks, communication failures still exist. No matter how far the rules go, there will always be mistakes.

They are categorized into three main types of communication failure.

Before the Tenerife accident, upon taking off, when the KLM pilot says, “we are now at takeoff”, his awareness of the situation could be summarized as “we’re currently taking off, the runway is now clear”. As for the air traffic controller’s awareness of the situation, it comes down to “they’re ready to take off but waiting for the PanAm aircraft to clear off the runway”.

Whatever the message or attitude, the exchange must make it possible to correct false information, obtain clarification and be sure to share the same awareness of the situation and the importance of care.
