Charisms continue in history the function of biblical prophets. Due to their vocation, the prophets are often found in a vital and necessary tension with the institutions and hierarchy. Charisms extend to the world the horizon of all, even of those who do not believe in charisms or consider them harmless for people left at the infant stage of existence. At the same time, yesterday and today very delicate and often dangerous social, ethical and spiritual dynamics stem from charisms, as their immense strength can be oriented, almost always without intentionality, for purposes that are harmful to people and to the very charismatic realities. The transformation of the ideal into an ideology, that is a version of the biblical idolatry , is always possible until a community maintains the gap between its ideal and its actual experience, and therefore between the charism and the institutions shaped to incarnate it and live it.
