ABSTRACT

The fundamental idea of governance is to preserve the autonomy of the university. The chapter makes concluding observations concerning different levels of governance. Observations in the field defy autonomy in practice as various centers of power act and interact to serve individual as well as group interests. In the concluding observation, recommendations are made in favor of an apex academic body to co-ordinate the functioning of universities with central government as well as state government. Universities need to function under able leadership, preserving self-regulation. Towards this end, various recommendations are suggested.
