ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the settlement of Bangladeshis in the US over the years. The chapter presents the history of Bangladeshi migration to the US as well as the distinguishing features of the Bangladeshi community in Southern California. By providing documents, it shows that the Bangladeshi Americans are the youngest and fastest-growing Asian population in the US, an increase much higher than their Pakistani and Indian counterparts. Family re-unification is a crucial factor behind this increase. Increased Bangladeshi immigrant groups in Southern California show that the areas inhabited by immigrants are in a state of flux. The chapter will show how, unlike more firmly settled immigrant groups, Bangladeshi people tend to move around in their new homeland. I will also show why few live in only one location, and the vast majority visit the home country or move between multiple places for their livelihoods.
