ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter will discuss a last salient area regarding furniture history—outdoor furniture. Industry wise outdoor furniture is categorized within the ‘Casual Furniture’ market which includes all things related to outdoor and casual living. What is obvious today is blurring of the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the growing desire to connect with nature. Outdoor space, regardless if public or private, a park, garden, patio, terrace or deck has become synonymous with good health—wide-ranging health benefits result from spending time outdoors. Over the last several decades notable architects and designers have been invited or commissioned to design outdoor furniture collections, setting the bar high with their innovations. This concluding chapter will discuss briefly the history and precedent for outdoor furniture, ending with contemporary examples sought by design professionals today.
