ABSTRACT

For university students seeking degrees in design related disciplines, communicating through a graphic language and vocabulary is the norm. For others not in the midst of their university studies—adult-education/continuing-education and lifelong learners—using a graphic language and vocabulary will be a new skill developed. Regardless if one is captivated and interested in the visual world and the objects that define its richness, there isn’t a more appropriate way to learn about furniture history than through visual means, using graphic communication as the primary tool for learning. The Analysis of Form: Nine-Step Methodology intends to enhance that ability. It is the idea of interaction between brain and hand, memory and muscle memory that will facilitate recall and recognition—creating an imprint in the student’s memory. This chapter will explain the structure of the methodology and how to navigate through the nine-steps using the key aspects critical to the nine-step methodology are—practice examples and visual notes exercises.
