ABSTRACT

No differently than a written narrative the graphic narrative is a story, a tool to communicate visual information”a visual story. In this case it is the visual analysis of furniture using sketching as the analysis tool. The intent of this chapter is to prepare the student and adult learner for Chapters 6–13 which are analogous to a survey course. For these chapters the reader will reference the “pictorial timeline”—applying The Analysis of Form: Nine-Step Methodology. This chapter is comprised of the author’s selection of furniture sketching examples from local Chicago practitioners—architects and designers, and other notable design professionals spanning the globe and decades to serve as a guide for the reader. The student and or adult learner can apply the techniques for their own practice examples and visual note studies for the pieces chosen to investigate. The end goal and apex of your analysis—the final Visual Notes Exercise, evidence of having grasp the essence of the “pictorial timeline” piece.
