ABSTRACT

There are no existing risk assessment tools specifically designed for firesetters, which has traditionally resulted in a ‘one size fits all’ approach. This chapter considers how the continuum of fire use conceptualisation and, specifically, the continuum of fire use theory (CoFUT) can inform the assessment of those who set fires. Some context on the type of assessments undertaken by forensic psychologists and allied professionals is provided. Issues with the existing approach to assessment with people who set fires are outlined and I will suggest how we can move practice forward. This chapter is structured roughly chronologically in line with how a forensic practitioner might conduct an assessment. First, tools and techniques for collating relevant background information on the service user are outlined. Next, a model will be proposed as an aid for conducting an offence analysis. Lastly, risk management considerations will be discussed.
