ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on the concept of attachment, which is a biologically-based behavior system that allows people to experience pleasure and joy with those they are attached to when they interact with them, and feel comforted by their nearness during times of stress. Emphasis is placed on the concept that the formation of attachment relationships begins at birth, and that infants are born equipped with a repertoire of behaviors that are meant to keep caregivers in close proximity. The importance of healthy attachment relationships in the growth and development of infants and toddlers, and how caregivers can effectively foster them with children in their care is described.
