ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the possibilities for applying 'rich tweaks' to activities about the geometry and the statistics. It focuses on three teaching episodes, where the teachers involved have all made use of rich tweaks to offer the children opportunities for mathematical reasoning. The first case study details about Mrs Strummer’s classroom, where she is using skilful questioning to adapt a standard ‘hidden shapes’ activity to create opportunities for reasoning. The second study follows a group of children as they discuss a graph showing a day in the life of a pet. The final study details about ‘Tess’ as she grapples with some questions about area and perimeter. The chapter examines how a teacher might tweak activities to encourage reasoning and how a very thorough understanding of an activity can allow a teacher to support children as they find their own points of interest and exploration.
